Black Breastfeeding Week 2020

August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month and the last week of August is Black Breastfeeding Week. Every year, I hold events and activities for Awesome Breastfeeders. This year’s theme is: Revive! Restore! Reclaim! Let’s connect to celebrate all things breastfeeding in the Black community!

Below are a list of my activities and events I am hosting or participating:

  • The Nursathon: A Virtual Experience
  • Black Men’s Facebook Chat
    • Tuesday, August 25, 5:30-6:30 PM PST
    • Time is given to the brotherhood, regardless if they’re fathers or not. We give them safe and sacred space to chat about their role within the Black community that includes their support and advocacy of breastfeeding. This event is exclusive to Black men.

  • Celebrating Black Motherhood: A Path To Healing Through Joy
  • Southern California WIC Regional BBW 2020 Circle
    • Thursday, August 27th, 2:30-4:00 PM PST (Registration Is Required)
    • While the focus is on Black WIC families, non-WIC families are welcome
  • Genesee County Breastfeeding Coalition: Chocolate Milk: The Documentary Screening
    • Friday, August 28th, 1:00-3:00 PM EST (Registration Is Required)
  • Black WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors Circle
    • Friday, August 28th, 2:30-4:00 PM PST (Registration Is Required)
    • This is an exclusive safe and sacred space for Black WIC PCs to connect, share, encourage, and be encouraged. This is event is exclusive to Black WIC PCs.
  • Awesome Breastfeeders Virtual Summit 
  • Awesome Breastfeeders Virtual Circle
    • Sunday, August 30th, 4:00-6:00 PM PST (Registration Is Required)
    • Join me for a special time of abundant feminine energy, wisdom, and village love with elders, emerging elders, seasoned breastfeeders, breastfeeders and expectant mommies. We will discuss reviving, restoring, and reclaiming village love for our mothers.

Then its time to schedule an Awesome Connection! I have a variety of platforms available to make our connections happen and to accommodate your schedule. Scroll down to review my offerings and let’s get your connection scheduled for either an in-person, conference call, or webinar session. Our meeting can include Mom and me; Mom, Dad, and me; or it can include your support team of family members and friends. You let me know how big and how you would like to meet. I can make it happen!

If you are outside of Los Angeles county and you would like to meet in-person, we can meet somewhere within the county. If you require additional time we can schedule that as well.

My services can be a great baby shower or holiday gift to an expectant family or a family who has just delivered. Gift the family with a gift card to use as they breastfeed their baby.

    • Hand expression is something that I highly recommend to families regardless of how pumping with an electric or manual pump is working out for them because it is more effective.

    • Information about the compatibility of medication with breastfeeding

        • An alternative to Infant Risk Center is e-lactancia; which provids user-friendly wording that center’s family’s 
  • Kimberly Durdin, MPH, IBCLC, Student Midwife
    • Kimberly Durdin is a Los Angeles based International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Student Midwife, Childbirth Educator and Doula. And Lydia’s mentor.
  • KindredSpaceLA
    • A hub for midwifery care, doula support, lactation consulting, education, support groups, enrichment, meditation and movement.
  • Mother’s Milk Bank: San Jose, CA
    • For families who have more milk than they can use or for families who are in need of human breast milk consider banked milk. I have worked with Mother’s Milk Bank of San Jose, CA and am familiar with their process and reputation. Families with private insurance and Medi-Cal are supported through Mother’s Milk Bank. Please call for information before believing that banked human milk is out of reach for you and your family. Donating does require some planning on your part, but it is doable.

    • Pre/Postpartum Doulas and Delivery Doulas national directory and mentoring for Black Doulas.

    • Headed by Nicole Deggins, CNM, MSN, MPH; Sista Midwife Productions provides education, training and consultations for communities, birth workers and organizations that work with child bearing families.
